  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 3.4.

I’ve been thinking lately about the various audiences we write for (and who often write for us). At the simplest level, of course, we write for, and about, lawyers and the legal industry. We can refine that a bit: We write for business lawyers and the legal industry in Central and Eastern Europe.

But then, quickly, like dough in the oven, that understanding begins to expand.

In fact, we write for three primary audiences: Domestic lawyers with law firms in each CEE country; Foreign and expatriate lawyers either within or outside CEE whose practices bring them into the region; and Senior in-house counsel directing the legal departments of major companies in the region.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 3.3.

Surprisingly (to us), Radu and I receive occasional inquiries about the extent to which CEE Legal Matters reaches an in-house audience, and whether or not we’ve thought about ways of helping law firms in CEE get their messages to the General Counsel and Heads of Legal who retain them. Ironically, and by contrast, we also receive messages claiming that while contacting Chief Legal Officers (CLOs) is all very nice...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 3.2.

As I was reading the news from across CEE last Sunday, I came across headlines showing that the far right was doing well in the current presidential elections in Austria – portending another in a series of victories by right wing parties across the region in recent years. Out go the old, in come the new.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 3.1.

February doesn’t get a lot of love, despite the holiday that lies in its middle. February seems, sometimes, like a cruel joke played on a world eager for hope and comfort. The month is still dark, still cold, still gray, and spring seems almost infinitely far off. Work is a slog, with little at the end of the day except the expectation of more work tomorrow.

    At least for some people.

But for us, at CEE Legal Matters, February resonates slightly differently. We associate the month with beginnings, hope, and excitement.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Special Year End Issue (Year 2)

Two years ago, when we rolled out our first issue, one of my big concerns (perhaps a bit silly in retrospect) was whether the design of the magazine we produce for lawyers in CEE is on par with the standard that a regional publication needs to strive for. Thus, one of the primary subjects I asked for feedback on at the time was the layout and feel of each issue. “Boy, this is content heavy(!),” was the common answer. And we liked it as such and took pride in the fact that we’re putting forward genuine data and analysis on, as our motto declares, “the news and newsmakers that shape Europe’s emerging legal markets.”

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.6.

I’ve been playing in a lot of (very) amateur tennis tournaments here in Prague this year, and I’ve enjoyed the competition, the friends I’ve made, the obvious increase in my own ability over the course of the year, and even, occasionally, bringing home a small trophy for my bookcase. It’s been fun, and I’m already looking forward to the 2016 season, which will inevitably bring new friends, new challenges, and maybe, if I’m lucky, a few more good results.

I mention this to illustrate that … I’m a pretty competitive person. Both I and Radu are, in fact. Seriously competitive. Don’t be fooled.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.5.

This has been an especially busy few months for us at CEE Legal Matters.

Oh, it’s not as if you can normally find us sleeping in a hammock on the beach with a hat pulled down over our eyes. When we started CEE Legal Matters, we were aware what we were getting into, and we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Spending hours every day searching for news of deals, cases, and transactions we could report on the CEE Legal Matters website...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.4.

As I was polishing up some of the final articles for this issue I received an e-mail from one of the law firm marketing representatives in the region – I’ll call her Kasia. Her e-mail read simply, “if you are going to report on deal X, we advised party Y, and I will follow-up with details as soon as I have them” – straight-forward enough! We’ve been telling our readers for years now that we depend greatly on their input if we are to keep track of all that is going on in the region (and there is plenty!), and here was a perfect example of someone listening...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.3.

The role of CEE Legal Matters, as Radu and I see it, is to serve as a conduit between the law firms of Central and Eastern Europe and the General Counsel and Heads of Legal who engage and retain them. As a result, almost everything we do in the magazine, on the website, and with our related services is designed to foster communication between the two, and to facilitate a useful and productive exchange of information about the law, about providers, about alternatives, about the legal marketplaces of CEE, and about the personalities that inhabit them.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.2.

I was all set to write about Russia and Ukraine, of course. Our Market Spotlights, in this issue, fall on two countries involved with each other in some kind of war (what kind of war is difficult to say), involving thousands of deaths, the loss (and the gain) of territory, and accusations and denials galore...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 2.1.

In this, our first regular issue of 2015, you’ll notice our Market Spotlight feature focuses on two markets: Hungary and Turkey. Although my personal backstory has nothing to do with why or how these two markets were chosen, I can’t deny my pleasure at the serendipitous selection...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Special Year End Issue

Six regular issues, plus a “special issue.” That’s what we promised subscribers to CEE Legal Matters. A new issue every two months, and then a Special Issue. Sure, for the first half of 2014, we weren’t sure what the Special Issue would look like, but Radu and I had committed ourselves to creating it, and we were confident we’d come up with something good.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.6.

First, you’re wondering about our cover. We understand. And trust us, we really tried to think of an image that would capture our Experts Review subject this month –  Capital Markets – ideally in combination somehow with Poland, the focus of our Market Spotlight feature. But … except for various images of polish currency, try as we might, we could not think of one thing that was appropriate and attractive. Blame it on limited imaginations, if you want. So then we decided to consider images of Poland. And, not surprisingly to those who know us best, our thoughts turned to food. Voila! Colorful, decidedly Polish, and frankly, pretty darned appetizing. Turns out we have excellent imaginations. We just need the right inspiration.

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.5.

Inevitably as David and I consider possible covers for each issue of the CEE Legal Matters magazine I propose a stamp… and he vetoes it. This time, as evident by the image of the 1984 stamp showing Lady Justice wielding a golden Sword in the Austrian Hall of Justice that graces the front of the issue, I won out. David agreed with me that, aside from simply looking groovy, it’s thematically representative both on Austria (our Market Spotlight) and on dispute resolution (Experts Review).

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.4.

Prague simultaneously demands and defies description. One writer called it a “city of alchemists and dreamers,” while another called it a “City of Dark Magic.” It has been suggested that “if European cities were a necklace, Prague would be a diamond among the pearls.” Richard Wagner called it, simply, “a city beyond compare.”

Franz Kafka, who lived his entire life in the Mater Urbium, had a different understanding of his home town...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.3.

Russia, it need not be said, is enormous. Russia is bigger than Pluto. Russia is huge.

I lived in Russia from 1995-1998, first in a small community outside of Vladivostok – eight hours ahead of the country’s capital – and then in Moscow itself. I was able to experience the excesses and wonders of that chaotic period, and I left for law school in the United States just as the ruble collapsed and the country entered one of its darker periods...

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.2.

"The current world record for completing a marathon run is held by Wilson Kipsang (2:03:23). Chuck Engle won the most marathons in history, coming in first in 171 races.

Marathons represent a commemoration of the fabled run of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier and messenger, who carried the news of the battle of Marathon to Athens. This month’s cover reflects our determination to go to considerable lengths in our efforts to inform our readers of relevant news and newsmakers from Central and Eastern Europe’s legal markets ... and we are in it for the long run!"

  • CEE Legal Matters: Issue 1.1.

"The current world record for solving Erno Rubik’s famous Cube is 5.55 seconds.

Rubik’s Cube is not on the cover of the premiere issue of the CEE Legal Matters magazine to illustrate concepts of puzzles or complexity (and no, not even because the magazine is based in Erno Rubik’s old home town). Instead, thinking about the Rubik’s Cube has us thinking about solutions and about the dedicated lawyers across Central and Eastern Europe who work with diligence and passion to solve their client’s needs and problems. We hope CEE Legal Matters will help in that process. Ultimately, we hope CEE Legal Matters helps provide solutions..."
