After a long year of waiting, law firms from Hungary finally had the opportunity to show off their bowling skills again last night, as the second year of the CEE Legal Matters Budapest Law Firm Bowling Challenge brought 14 four-person teams together for an intense challenge, with the proceeds donated to the winning team's charity of choice.

In The Corner Office we invite Managing Partners at law firms across the region to share information about their unique roles. The question this time around: What is your favorite question when interviewing a job applicant, and why?

Building upon the successes of the three past regional GC Summits in Budapest, Istanbul, and Warsaw, CEE Legal Matters is excited to be hosting the Hungary GC Summit – our first ever country-specific GC event. We sat down with the Chairman of the conference, Miklos Orban, Partner at Orban & Perlaki, to get his thoughts about the upcoming event. More information about the event itself can be found on the event website, here

With slightly over a month to go until the first Hungary General Counsel Summit — the first ever country-specific GC Summit organized by CEE Legal Matters — on August 29, 2017, three members of the “Building the Legal Function as Integral Business Unit” panel scheduled for the event gathered at the offices of Budapest's OPL Law Firm to plan and prepare for their discussion.

Chief Legal Officers know how demanding their jobs are. They have to create and manage effective teams, retain and instruct external counsel, advise their employers on strategic decisions, and implement new technology, all while putting out 20 fires a day.

On the evening of February 1, 2017, CEE Legal Matters hosted the first ever CEELM Budapest Law Firm Bowling Challenge: A competition of four-person teams from leading law firms in Hungary, with all proceeds to go to the winner’s charity of choice. A total of 13 law firms competed for the impressive trophy – and the glory that goes along with it.

OPL at a Glance

OPL is a legal consultancy in Budapest which works in partnership with the leading challenger law firm, gunnercooke. Our office is 35+ strong which lands us in the Top 10 of the Hungarian legal market in size, but our team members come from 8 different countries which makes us one of the most diverse and international legal teams in whole CEE region. But we are unique from other perspectives as well: OPL gunnercooke is an eco-system consisting of many legal ventures owned by OPL. We own one of the region’s leading policy and regulatory firms, but we also own a legal software developer company, a monitoring boutique, and a legal startup which matches freelance lawyers with clients via an online platform. With the combined offering of these companies, our clients may receive not only a comprehensive legal support, but also a unique perspective.

We are proud of our employment law practice. The team consists of practicing lawyers, HR professionals and academics, which make them capable of handling the most comprehesive and sophisticated labour queries. OPL’s employment team serves multinational clients, NGOs, trade unions and SMEs, but our team members are very socially consious, so the team often takes on employment matters of private individuals as pro bono cases.

Apart from the usual day-to-day contentious and non-contentious employment and data protection questions from clients, our tea also regularly carries out project-based services of differing scale. This can vary from conducting complex employment compliance programs to revising or drafting HR policies through matters concerning collective redundancy until transfer of undertakings. We also provide training to management, human resources professionals and staff on all aspects of employment law.

In the recent years, we built up a network of employment law specialists in the CEE region, with whom we cooperate on an everyday basis. Through this network, we advise clients on their employment and labour matters as a single point of contact across the whole region.

We have been a best friend of the international alliance, L&E Global since 2019. Our employment lawyers regularly contribute to hrportal.hu, a major website for Hungarian HR professionals and the European Employment Law Cases (EELC), an online database of judgements of national courts, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights in the field of employment law.
